Dr. Seuss's Storytime (2018)
By Justin Gamiao, Paul Chong, Alvin Pascua, and Jake Scheuler
Electronic art installation, mixed media

Part of the exhibition "Into a Dream"
May 30th, 2019 @ UC San Diego Geisel Library

Introduction
This installation art piece was made for the Time & Process-Based Digital Media II class at UC San Diego. For this project in particular, we were tasked in creating a piece of interactive art that is influenced by the surroundings of the exhibition, which in this case, was the famous Geisel Library (named after Dr. Seuss). This installation piece mixes a variety of artmaking methods that creates a fun and interactive experience based off of the tales by Dr. Seuss, all within the walls of an otherwise studious library space.

Inspired by the concept of interactive queues found in many theme parks around the world, as well as passive interactive art installations, we aimed to create one that is able to give color to an otherwise uninspiring area of library.
Tools used: Arduino, MaKey MaKey
Softwares used: Processing, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Premiere Pro

Concept
Our space within the Geisel Library we installed in were the concrete tunnels located on the basement floor of library. Normally a long stretch between a computer hallway and a sea of books, we aimed to transform a part of the space into a childlike, whimsical area that projects various excerpts from famous Dr. Seuss stories, such as The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham.

Those passing by are encouraged to step on the panels that are scattered on the floor, each one activating a voice clip and scene on the projected book. Alongside the interactive elements, the hallway is given a cartoon treatment with hanging clouds, rolling hills, truffula trees, and a large red book, which projects small video and audio clips from animated specials of Dr. Seuss's stories.
